Finally!
|
I have completed entering the information on every sociologist at universities in Canada that is available on department websites! I'm now considering creating a sociological projects database. However, that one I will leave for users to enter information into.
I feel so relieved. Good day.

Job Search with Undergrad in Soci
|
Hello All,
Sorry for the slow progress on the Sociologist Database. I hope to get some more finished this weekend. This past few weeks has been one of a fair bit of adjustment for me learning my new role as a grad student.
In other news check this out, it's a bit focused on American students, but should have some good information none the less:
http://www.asanet.org/footnotes/job_0909.html
"Searching for a Job with an Undergraduate Degree in Sociology"
The National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2009 Student
Survey indicates that 19.7 percent of students had a job in hand when
they graduated in May 2009. Compare this to the 26 percent of students
in 2008 and 51 percent in 2007. Clearly, the economic crisis is a
personal experience for a large proportion of college graduates. It is
equally clear that many recent graduates, and those who will be
graduating soon, could use some encouragement and assistance with the
job search process.

Knowing Stats Will Earn You Cash
|
A friend sent me this artilce yesterday, and I don't think that there is a sociology student out there who won't appreciate it, or at least be a little motivated by it's message.
Here is an excerpt from the article: "For Today’s Graduate, Just One Word: Statistics"
"Ms. Grimes is an Internet-age statistician, one of many who are changing the image of the profession as a place for dronish number nerds. They are finding themselves increasingly in demand — and even cool.
“I keep saying that the sexy job in the next 10 years will be statisticians,” said Hal Varian, chief economist at Google. “And I’m not kidding.” The rising stature of statisticians, who can earn $125,000 at top companies in their first year after getting a doctorate, is a byproduct of the recent explosion of digital data. In field after field, computing and the Web are creating new realms of data to explore — sensor signals, surveillance tapes, social network chatter, public records and more. And the digital data surge only promises to accelerate, rising fivefold by 2012, according to a projection by IDC, a research firm."

Research Grant Writing and Job Opportunities
|
I have updated the Research Related links page with links to pages that offer great resources on how to write a good grant proposal.
I also just added a ton of job search websites, many are from Alberta, quite a few national search engines and organizations too though. Definitely check it out.
Remember, if you have any suggestions for job opportunities, volunteer opportunities or other please email me and I will be glad to include them in the SUN resources.

Database Updates!
|
Once again I have updated the database with more information. Todays updated included sociologists from Nipissing University, Queen's University, Simon Fraser University, St. Francis Xavier University, St. Mary's University, St. Thomas University.
There are many sociologists whose information was not included in the database due to a lack of information provided on their department websites, there were two schools in particular that were lacking relevant information and as such a large number of sociologists from these schools were not included.
I attempted to include sociologists from Trent University, however the faculty information website was not working.
I plan on finishing the rest of the schools listed on the Sociology Departments page as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience.

Minor Updates
|
Hello All,
I have just added information about job opportunities with Stats Canada on the Job Opportunities page; I also added their information about
"The Work of Economists, Sociologists, and Social Scientists" you can read on the Sociology Career Information page.
Having had to spend so much time preparing for the Canadian Sociological Association conference a couple weeks ago and being
overwhelmed and exhausted from attending the conference I took a bit of a break this past couple of weeks from pretty much everything. Now though I
feel as though I'm back up to the task of entering more content into the Sociologist Database, as well as some more heavy reading for my own edification.
Congress was a great time this year and thank you to all of you whom I met and am now acquainted with, it was a pleasure to hear about your work,
your lives, and your suggestions for my own future research and career goals. I hope to see you all again in the future!

Database Updates!
|
I have updated the database with sociologists from: Lakehead University; Laurentian Univesity; McGill University; McMaster University; Memorial University of Newfoundland; and Mount Alison University.
Phew, that was a tiring run of data entry. I pitty anyone who has to do more of this... oh wait I still have at least 29 more Universities' sociologists to enter, :(
As an aside, I would like to ask anyone who has their own website or blog to help promote SUN by posting a link to the SUN website on their website. It would be much appreciated.
Thank you!

Update April 2009
|
I have recently updated the website with a google search feature. The google search will allow you to search all content on the SUN website (pretty handy). I have also updated the sociologist database with sociologists from Carleton, Concordia, and Dalhousie. Hopefully I will have time for more updates soon as well.
Things have been much busier this past couple of months than I had hoped, which has resulted in less time for me to spend on the database and other SUN related activities, but such is life.
